You buy BTC before you deposit — usually just once, then top up as needed. Reputable NZ-friendly on-ramps that accept NZD from your bank include Easy Crypto (a New Zealand-founded exchange, popular for buying BTC with an NZD bank transfer and sending it straight to your own wallet), Independent Reserve (an Australasian exchange with NZD support and a solid compliance record), and Binance / global exchanges (large selection; NZD funding options change, so check the current methods on their site).
The typical flow: create an account, complete identity verification (AML/KYC at the exchange — separate from any casino), fund with NZD by bank transfer, buy BTC, then send it either to a personal wallet or directly to your casino deposit address. We don't quote fees because they change constantly and vary by method — check the live rate before buying. Send a small test amount first if it's your first transfer, and never share your wallet's recovery (seed) phrase with anyone. A casino only ever needs your deposit address.
The Lightning Network is a "layer 2" built on top of Bitcoin for fast, cheap, small payments. Instead of writing every transaction to the main chain (which takes ~10 minutes and a variable fee), Lightning settles near-instantly for a tiny fee. If a casino supports Lightning deposits and withdrawals, it's the best way to move smaller amounts of BTC — you get near-instant cash-outs without waiting for on-chain confirmations. Not every Bitcoin casino supports it yet, so check the cashier. For larger one-off transfers, standard on-chain BTC is still fine.
There are two costs to understand. The network fee is paid to Bitcoin miners, not the casino, and varies with how busy the network is. Some casinos also charge their own withdrawal fee on top — many reputable ones don't, so check. On timing: on-chain BTC takes ~10 minutes for the first confirmation once the casino approves (longer when the network is congested), while Lightning BTC is near-instant for supported sites and smaller amounts. Remember the two-phase reality: total time = casino approval + network settlement. A site that approves instantly still can't beat Bitcoin's confirmation time on-chain. See our instant-withdrawal guide for the full breakdown.
| Method | Payout speed | Fees | NZD balance? | Value stable? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (on-chain) | ~10 min after approval | Network fee (to miners) | Only at hybrids | No — moves with market |
| Bitcoin (Lightning) | Near-instant | Very low | Only at hybrids | No |
| USDT (TRC-20) | ~1–2 min | Very low | Pegged to USD | Yes (stablecoin) |
| E-wallet (Skrill/Neteller) | Within 24 hours | Possible fees | Yes | Yes |
| Visa/Mastercard | 1–3 business days | Possible FX fees | Yes | Yes |
| Bank transfer | 3–10 business days | Possible fees | Yes | Yes |
Bottom line: Bitcoin is far faster than cards or bank transfer, but for the very fastest, value-stable cash-outs a stablecoin like USDT can beat on-chain BTC. Note POLi was discontinued in 2022 — ignore any site still advertising it.
New Zealand has no licensed domestic online casinos — under the Gambling Act 2003 the sites Kiwis use are based offshore (Curaçao, Anjouan, Costa Rica). It is not illegal for you to play at them, and Bitcoin itself is legal to own and use in NZ (crypto services are FMA-regulated). A new online casino licensing regime is expected from 2026.
On tax: gambling winnings are generally not taxable for New Zealand recreational players — the IRD treats them as a windfall. But disposing of the Bitcoin itself (e.g. selling BTC back to NZD at a gain) can fall under the IRD's crypto-asset rules, and frequent, systematic activity may be taxable. Keep records and check with the IRD or an accountant. You must be 18 or older to play.
