What is an Ethereum casino?

An Ethereum casino accepts ETH — and often ERC-20 tokens like USDT and USDC — for deposits and withdrawals. Mechanically it works like any crypto casino: send ETH to the casino's address, play, and cash out to your wallet. Ethereum is worth understanding on its own because of two things that set it apart from Bitcoin: it charges a variable "gas" fee per transaction, and it supports a whole ecosystem of cheaper Layer-2 networks that most players should be using for small deposits. This is a lower-volume, more technical corner of the market, so we've built this page mainly for players who specifically hold ETH and want to use it well.

Gas fees: you pay the network, not the casino

Every Ethereum transaction carries a "gas" fee. This is the crucial point most guides gloss over: gas is paid to the Ethereum network's validators, not to the casino. The casino doesn't set it or profit from it; it rises and falls with how busy the network is. When the network is congested, a simple deposit or withdrawal on Ethereum Mainnet can cost meaningfully more than the same transfer of a cheaper coin. That's not the casino gouging you — it's the cost of using the main Ethereum chain at a busy moment. The practical implication: for small casino amounts, a fixed-ish gas fee can be a large percentage of your transfer. That's exactly what Layer-2 networks solve.

Mainnet vs Layer-2 (Polygon, Arbitrum, Base)

Layer-2 networks are chains built on top of Ethereum that process transactions far more cheaply while still settling to Ethereum's security. If a casino supports them, they're the smart default for everyday play.

NetworkTypical feeSpeedBest for
Ethereum Mainnet (ERC-20)Higher, variable (gas)~1–5 minLarger transfers where fixed gas is a small %
PolygonVery lowFastSmall, frequent deposits/withdrawals
ArbitrumLowFastCheaper ETH transfers with Ethereum security
BaseLowFastLow-cost transfers where supported

Rule of thumb: few players should be gambling on Mainnet with small amounts because of gas. Use a Layer-2 if the casino offers it — and always match the network on both ends. Sending ETH or a token on the wrong network can lose the funds permanently.

How to buy ETH in New Zealand

Same on-ramps as any coin. NZ-friendly exchanges that accept NZD bank funding include Easy Crypto (New Zealand-founded), Independent Reserve (Australasian, NZD support) and larger global exchanges such as Binance (check current NZD methods). Create an account, complete identity verification (AML/KYC at the exchange, separate from the casino), fund with NZD, buy ETH, then send it to a wallet you control — a software wallet such as MetaMask or Trust Wallet, or a Ledger/Trezor hardware wallet for larger holdings — or directly to the casino. If you plan to use a Layer-2, make sure your wallet and the casino both support that network before you transfer. We don't quote fees, which change constantly; check the live rate first, and never share your wallet seed phrase.

See our dedicated Bitcoin and USDT guides for the full picture. If avoiding price swings matters most, USDT is usually the more practical casino coin.

Is ETH gambling legal in NZ? (and tax)

New Zealand has no licensed domestic online casinos under the Gambling Act 2003, so the sites Kiwis use are offshore (Curaçao, Anjouan, Costa Rica). It is not illegal for you to play at them, and ETH is legal to own and use in NZ (crypto services are FMA-regulated). A new licensing regime is expected from 2026. Tax: gambling winnings are generally not taxable for NZ recreational players (the IRD treats them as a windfall), but disposing of the ETH itself can fall under the IRD's crypto-asset rules, and systematic activity may be taxed. Keep records and confirm with the IRD or an accountant. You must be 18 or older to play.

Ethereum casinos in NZ — frequently asked questions

Can you gamble with Ethereum in NZ?

Yes. Many crypto casinos that accept NZ players take ETH. You buy ETH from an NZ-friendly exchange, send it to the casino, and can cash out back to ETH. It’s legal for a NZ resident to play at these offshore sites.

Why are Ethereum gas fees so high?

Gas is what you pay the network’s validators to process your transaction — it goes to the network, not the casino, and rises when the network is busy. For small transfers, use a Layer-2 (Polygon, Arbitrum) or a cheaper coin.

Mainnet or Layer-2 for casino play?

For small amounts, use a Layer-2 if supported — fees are a fraction of Mainnet and settlement is fast. Keep Mainnet ERC-20 for larger transfers where the gas fee is a small percentage.

Is Ethereum gambling safe?

It can be at a licensed casino using SSL, provably-fair games and, for on-chain games, audited smart contracts (e.g. a CertiK audit). The house edge still applies — provably fair proves outcomes weren’t rigged, not that you’ll win.

ETH or USDT for casino play?

USDT is a stablecoin so its value doesn’t move while you play; ETH exposes you to price swings but suits players who already hold it. For fast, cheap, value-stable cash-outs, USDT on TRC-20 is usually more practical.
