Why bet offshore vs the TAB NZ?

Start with the fact that shapes everything about betting in New Zealand: the TAB is a legal monopoly. Under the Racing Industry Act 2020, TAB NZ — run day-to-day by the global operator Entain under a delegated agreement — is the only bookmaker allowed to take domestic bets on sport and racing. Its newer, app-first "social" brand betcha is the same company (Entain New Zealand Limited), not a competitor. 2. Offshore betting sits in a grey area — for operators. The sites above are licensed overseas and take bets from New Zealanders. In 2025 the Government passed a law (associated with Racing Minister Winston Peters) that regulates offshore operators — how they can advertise into New Zealand and requiring them to pay a share to the local racing industry and the tax base. Some commentary online, including a widely-shared Reddit thread, framed this as "NZ bans all offshore betting including bet365 and Stake." That framing is misleading.
3. You, the punter, are not committing an offence by placing a bet. Every credible reading of the law is consistent on this: it targets the operators, their advertising and their revenue, not individual Kiwi bettors. There is no penalty for a New Zealander depositing at an offshore site and having a punt.

What the law does mean for you in practice: some operators may pull their New Zealand-facing marketing, and the range of sites openly advertising here may narrow over time.
