Betting bonuses NZ: the real value, not the headline

A betting bonus is only as good as its terms. The offers above are ranked by real NZD value once wagering is factored in — a smaller bonus you can actually clear beats a huge one you never will. New to this? Start with our main sports betting guide, which ranks the bookmakers themselves; grab the offer on your phone via the betting apps guide; and if you want to use a bonus in-play, on the rugby, the horses or the cricket, we've covered those separately.

The types of betting bonus explained

"Bonus" is a catch-all word that hides half a dozen very different offers. Knowing which one you're looking at is the first step to working out whether it's worth claiming.

Welcome / matched-deposit bonus

The most common offer. The book matches a percentage of your first deposit — e.g. 100% up to NZ$250 means deposit NZ$250 and receive NZ$250 in bonus funds. Comes with wagering (turnover) before you can withdraw. This is real bonus cash, not a free bet.

Free bet / bet credits

A fixed-value credit (e.g. NZ$30) you stake like a bet, but the stake is not returned when it wins — you keep the profit only. A NZ$350 first-deposit free bet like Rooster.bet's is the headline version.

Bet-and-get / risk-free refund

Place a qualifying first bet and get a free bet back regardless of result, or a stake refund (usually as a bonus bet, not cash) if it loses. Effectively a second chance rather than free money, and the refund itself carries free-bet rules.

Cashback / insurance

A percentage of net losses, or an acca (multi) insurance refund, returned over a period. Usually paid as bonus funds with their own wagering. Enhanced/boosted odds and reloads round out the existing-customer field.

Bonus vs free bet — the difference that trips people up

A matched-deposit bonus gives you bonus cash. Once you clear the wagering, that money — and everything you won with it — converts to withdrawable cash. A free bet (also called a bonus bet or bet credit) works differently: the stake is not returned. When a free bet wins, you keep the profit only — the value of the free-bet stake itself stays with the bookmaker.

Say you have a NZ$50 free bet and back a selection at odds of 3.00. With real cash, a winning NZ$50 bet at 3.00 returns NZ$150 (your NZ$50 stake + NZ$100 profit). With a free bet, the same winning bet returns only NZ$100 — the profit. That NZ$50 gap is why a "NZ$50 free bet" is worth less than NZ$50 in cash — realistically about 70–80% of face value depending on the odds. Rule of thumb: with free bets, back higher odds than you normally would; with matched-deposit cash bonuses, focus on clearing the turnover safely at the minimum qualifying odds.

How to claim a betting bonus

Claiming an offer is straightforward once you know the four things that can silently void it.

  • Promo code — some offers credit automatically; others need a code entered at registration or on the deposit screen. Enter it exactly; you generally can't apply it after the deposit lands.
  • Minimum deposit — almost every welcome offer has a floor. Librabet, for example, requires a minimum deposit of NZ$40; 22bet's floor is a tiny NZ$2. Deposit below the minimum and the bonus won't activate.
  • Minimum odds — qualifying and wagering bets usually must be at or above a set price, commonly 1.50 or higher. A NZ$10 punt at 1.20 typically won't count toward turnover.
  • Opt-in — many promotions require you to tick a box or click "claim" before you deposit. Skip it and the offer is void, and it can't be added retroactively. Screenshot the offer terms the day you claim, in case of a dispute.

Wagering / turnover explained in NZD

Wagering — also called turnover or a "rollover" — is the amount you must bet before bonus funds (and any winnings from them) become withdrawable cash. Take a 100% up to NZ$200 bonus at 6x turnover on minimum odds 1.50. You deposit NZ$200 and receive NZ$200 in bonus funds. Wagering is 6x the bonus, so you must bet 6 × NZ$200 = NZ$1,200 in total, every qualifying bet at 1.50 or higher. On a 6x rollover, NZ$1,200 of turnover is very achievable across a normal betting week or two. That's a fair offer.

On the sports side of these hybrid books, wagering is usually a fair 6x to 10x — Gambiva's welcome runs at a notably low 20x, Librabet at 6x, Goldenbet's sports offer at 10x. On the casino side of the same operators, wagering is far steeper — commonly 35x to 50x (Rooster.bet 40x, BassBet 35x, BetLabel 35x, 22bet 50x). The lesson is blunt: a 6x sports bonus asking NZ$1,200 of turnover is worth chasing; a 50x casino bonus asking NZ$10,000 on the same NZ$200 rarely is. When a book quotes one wagering figure for sports and another for casino, make sure you know which applies to the offer you're claiming.

What's the catch with bonus bets?

Every one of these is real, and every one is legal fine print, not a scam.

  • Winnings only are returned — a free/bonus bet doesn't give the stake back. Win a NZ$25 bonus bet at 2.00 and you get NZ$25 profit, not NZ$50.
  • Minimum odds — you can't park a free bet on a 1.10 red-hot favourite. Most offers demand 1.50, 1.80 or even 2.00 minimum.
  • Short expiry — free bets and bonus funds routinely expire in 7 to 30 days.
  • Max bet while wagering — many books cap the stake you can place while a bonus is active (often NZ$10–NZ$30). Bet above it and you can forfeit the bonus.
  • Game / market weighting — not every bet counts 100% toward turnover.
  • Maximum cash-out cap — some offers cap how much bonus-derived winnings you can withdraw. Read this before you dream big.

How TAB bonus bets work in NZ

Because the TAB is New Zealand's only domestic bookmaker, a lot of Kiwis specifically want to know how TAB Bonus Bets work. The TAB operates under the Racing Industry Act 2020 (its social brand betcha is the same Entain-run company, not a rival). TAB NZ issues Bonus Bets to members through promotions and loyalty rewards. They are members-only and generally modest in size — the TAB, as a monopoly, has no competitive pressure to hand out big welcome offers the way offshore books do.

The crucial rule is the same one that trips people up everywhere: the stake is not returned on a winning Bonus Bet — you keep the profit only. Stake a NZ$20 TAB Bonus Bet at odds of 3.00 and win, and you receive NZ$40 (the profit), not the full NZ$60 return. Offshore welcome offers are typically much bigger — a first-deposit free bet up to NZ$350 (Rooster.bet) or a matched deposit up to NZ$1,000 (Gambiva) dwarfs a typical TAB Bonus Bet — but bigger comes with strings, so read the turnover and minimum odds.

No-deposit free bets in NZ

The holy grail of promo-hunting is the no-deposit free bet — free money just for registering. They exist, but temper your expectations. No-deposit offers in the NZ-facing market are rare, and when they appear they are small — competitors researching this niche cite figures up to roughly NZ$220 at the very top end, with most far below that. They are also the most heavily conditioned promotions going: expect a minimum-odds rule, a short expiry, a strict maximum cash-out cap, and full ID verification (KYC) before you can withdraw. For most Kiwi punters, a fair matched-deposit welcome offer with low wagering delivers far more usable value.

Offers we couldn't fully confirm

Honesty matters more than a tidy table. Goldenbet advertises a 100% up to $500 sports welcome, but we couldn't confirm the currency is NZD on the operator's NZ-facing page — treat the dollar figure as unconfirmed until you see it in your account. Casinia, BassBet, Librabet, Nomini and Spinanga all route NZ visitors to an /au/ path, so while each accepts Kiwi players and quotes a NZD-style figure in our table, the exact NZD cap and terms aren't guaranteed to match the NZ landing page. Verify the current offer, currency and wagering on the operator's own site before you deposit. If a figure isn't clearly documented there, don't assume it exists.

Responsible gambling in New Zealand

A bonus is marketing, not free money. If gambling stops feeling like entertainment you can afford, help is free and confidential.

  • Set limits before you play — every book here lets you cap deposits, set session timers or self-exclude, especially when chasing a bonus.
  • Warning signs — chasing losses, betting money meant for bills, or hiding play from whānau. Any one is a reason to stop and reach out.
  • You must be 18 or older to bet in New Zealand. Odds are always in the house's favour.

Frequently asked questions

Which betting site gives you a bonus?

Almost every offshore bookmaker that accepts Kiwi players offers a welcome bonus. In our testing the best-value NZD offers come from Rooster.bet (100% free bet up to NZ$350), Gambiva (200% up to NZ$1,000, at a notably low 20x wagering) and 22bet (100% up to NZ$250). The TAB issues smaller members-only bonus bets rather than a headline welcome offer.

How do you use bonus bets on the TAB in NZ?

TAB NZ issues Bonus Bets to members through promotions and loyalty. You place one by selecting it on the bet slip in place of cash. The key rule is that the stake is not returned on a winning Bonus Bet — you keep only the profit. Stake a NZ$20 Bonus Bet at odds of 3.00 and win, and you receive NZ$40 profit, not the full NZ$60 return.

What's the catch with bonus bets?

The main catches are: the stake is not returned (winnings only), a minimum-odds rule usually applies (often 1.50+), the bonus expires quickly (commonly 7–30 days), there may be a maximum bet while wagering, some markets are weighted or excluded, and a maximum cash-out cap can limit your withdrawal. Read the specific terms before you claim.

Are betting bonuses taxable in NZ?

No. Gambling winnings, including winnings from a bonus or free bet, are generally not taxable for New Zealand residents — the IRD treats recreational betting as a windfall, not income. The only exception is someone running a genuine business of betting. Confirm your own situation with the IRD or an accountant.

Do I have to deposit to get a free bet?

Usually yes. The great majority of NZ betting bonuses are matched-deposit offers or first-deposit free bets, so you need to fund your account first. True no-deposit free bets exist but are rare, small (competitors cite around NZ$220 at the top end) and heavily conditioned with minimum odds, short expiry and low cash-out caps.

Can I bet in NZD on these offers?

At most books, yes — Rooster.bet, 22bet, BetLabel, Ivibet and Zotabet run native NZD accounts. Goldenbet's currency (GBP/EUR/USD/CAD/BRL) doesn't confirm NZD, and the five lynmonkel brands (Casinia, BassBet, Librabet, Nomini, Spinanga) route NZ visitors to an /au/ site, so verify the account currency and the exact NZD cap on the operator's own site before you deposit.
