How betting apps work in New Zealand

Open the App Store or Google Play in New Zealand and search "betting", and you'll mostly see two names: TAB and betcha. That's not because they're the only apps that work here — it's because Apple and Google generally publish gambling apps only from operators who hold a local licence for the country you're in. In New Zealand, that means the TAB.

Under the Racing Industry Act 2020, TAB NZ — run day-to-day by the global operator Entain under a delegated agreement — holds the monopoly on domestic sports and racing betting. Its newer, app-first "social" brand betcha is the same company (Entain New Zealand Limited), not a rival. So the two apps that clear the store gate are effectively two products from the same monopoly. That's why you won't find a Rooster.bet or 22bet app sitting in the store next to them.

Offshore bookmakers — the ones with sharper odds and deeper markets — take a different route. Because they can't (and generally don't try to) list in the NZ stores, they run mobile web apps instead: a browser-based sportsbook engineered to feel and behave like a native app. Add it to your home screen and you get a full-screen icon, push notifications and offline caching, without ever visiting a store. On Android there's a second option — a downloadable APK (the operator's own installer file). Both routes get you the same account, the same NZD wallet, and the same live betting you'd have on desktop. A 2025 law regulates how offshore operators advertise into NZ and pay levies here — it targets operators, not punters, so there's no offence in a Kiwi using one of these apps.

How to install offshore betting apps on iOS & Android

This is the bit the big comparison sites skip, and it's the single most useful thing on this page. There's usually no App Store or Play Store download for an offshore book in NZ — so you add its site to your home screen as a web app (a PWA), which behaves just like a downloaded app. It takes about a minute.

iPhone & iPad (iOS, using Safari)

1. Open Safari (this trick is Safari-specific — it doesn't work reliably in Chrome on iOS) and go to the bookmaker's site.
2. Log in or create your account first if you like, then tap the Share icon (the square with an upward arrow) in the bottom toolbar.
3. Scroll down the share sheet and tap "Add to Home Screen".
4. Give it a name, tap Add, and a full-screen app icon appears on your home screen.

Tapping that icon now launches the sportsbook full-screen, with no browser bars — it's indistinguishable from a native app for day-to-day betting. There's no App Store download to wait for, no storage hit, and it updates itself every time the operator updates its site.

Android (Chrome — two options)

Option A — Add to Home screen (recommended, easiest):

1. Open Chrome and go to the bookmaker's site.
2. Tap the three-dot menu (top right) and choose "Add to Home screen" (some sites also pop up an "Install app" prompt automatically).
3. Confirm the name and tap Add — the web app icon lands on your home screen and runs full-screen, just like on iOS.

Option B — Install the operator's APK (only if you want the native build):

1. On the bookmaker's site, look for an "Android app" or "Download .apk" link and download the file.
2. When Android blocks it, go to Settings → Apps → (your browser) → Install unknown apps and toggle "Allow from this source".
3. Open the downloaded APK and tap Install.

Only ever download an APK from the operator's own official domain — never a third-party "app download" site, which is where malware hides. Re-disable "install unknown apps" once you're done. Sideloaded APKs auto-update less reliably than a store app or a home-screen web app, so for most people the home-screen web app (Option A) is safer and lower-hassle.

Is the bet365 app available in NZ?

The short answer: sometimes — but it sits squarely in the grey area, and it can vanish without notice.
